During our trip this year to the Hope for the Suffering Medical Camps in India, we became acutely aware of the hardships faced by the parents of this country. In the United States, immunization of children is a relatively simple and normal procedure. However, to have a child immunized in India the average mother must give up a day's wage and travel long distances by foot (or if she is lucky by bus), while carrying at least one child. She will then stand in line for hours - sometimes half a day - in the hot sun. That evening, weary from the heat and the long journey home, she has to catch up on her chores while putting up with a cranky child who is now running a slight fever. Up half the night with a crying baby, she must justify to herself the loss of time, money and hardship for a child that is not even sick. Some mothers make the sacrifice; many, many more do not. The goal of Hope for the Suffering is to create a desire for regular children's vaccinations through education and increased access to free medical camps. Each time we visit India and witness the large number of children in need of healthcare - their unnecessary suffering; each time we have to place a child on our waiting list, it breaks our heart. Hope for the Suffering would like to share what our eyes have seen and hearts have felt, but there are things words cannot convey. The sheer number of children we are losing due to lack of proper healthcare is staggering. Hope for the Suffering's commitment to these children is long term, dedicated and perserving.
