Distance from God

"Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulder and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent."

Luke 15:4-7

Distance from God

Sometimes a person needs to express his spirirtual problems to another person, such as a counselor or close friend. The act of verbalizing the problem seems to be beneficial. Just the fact that the counselor or friend listens and cares, and he will maintain strict confidentiality, seems to bring great relief. "A burden shared is a burden halved".

Returning to good relationship with God involves a change of attitude and a heart-commitment. God is always close - it is man who perceives the distance. Sometimes the distance disappears almost immediately after heartfelt prayer. Sometimes the healing process begins with prayer and continues as we practice the disciplines of prayer, Bible study, mediation and assembling with other believers. Pulling away from relationships and activities that hurt you spiritually are also necessary

You must make a choice to return to a "Christian way of life". Salvation does not come from good works, but regaining control of wayward habits will help you feel closer to God. Perhaps some spiritual disciplines were never learned, in which case a pastor can offer instruction in these important truths.
